The capital of Alsace is home to many fragments of the Romanesque period. Its sumptuous Gothic cathedral is home to an 11th-century Romanesque crypt. The church of Saint-Etienne still preserves parts of the 12th century. The façade of Saint-Thomas church, dating from the early 13th century, shows the transition between the two medieval styles. The cloister of Saint-Pierre le Jeune, partly Romanesque, is widely considered to be one of the oldest north of the Alps. The Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame houses some of the finest examples of Alsatian Romanesque art from sites along the ‘Route Romane’, including the Christ de Wissembourg stained glass window, the oldest figurative stained glass window preserved in France, if not the world…
