History

Neuwiller-lès-Saverne has two Romanesque buildings whose history is closely linked: l’abbatiale Saints-Pierre-et-Paul et l’église Saint-Adelphe.

In 846, just over a century after the foundation of a Benedictine abbey on this site, the relics of Saint Adelphe were transferred to the abbey church. Following a series of miracles, a large pilgrimage grew up around the relics and, in the 12th century, it became necessary to build a new building to house and preserve monastic life.
